Audit

How are you measuring your health and safety performance?

How do you benchmark your compliance against statutory health and safety requirements and existing systems for managing health and safety?

A health and safety audit is a vital tool for successful health and safety management. An audit will examine and report upon your existing health and safety management system and the degree of implementation, along with compliance with statutory requirements.

A typical audit programme will include:

Opening meeting

To introduce the lead auditor and agree the audit programme.

Document review

All relevant health and safety documentation will be examined. This will involve, for example, looking at records, systems, procedures and instructions for completeness, accuracy, reliability and compliance with legislative and company requirements.

Interviews with key personnel

The purpose of interviewing individuals is to gain information about the operation and perception of the health and safety management system.

Inspections/observations

A visual observation of work activities is carried out to examine ‘on the ground’ compliance with statutory requirements and to verify the effectiveness of the health and safety management systems. (To determine “what actually happens”)

Audit review meeting

To summarise the findings from the audit.

Preparation of draft report

To enable factual accuracy to be checked and to ensure that the audit report and its findings are understood.

Submission of final report

The report will highlight compliance with legislative and company requirements, along with successes and opportunities for further improvements.
Any remedial actions required and the priority for addressing them is highlighted in a detailed action plan.
